When schools and colleges look for authentic voices who understand the challenges facing first-generation college students, Fabian Ramirez doesn’t just speak about the journey, he lived it.
Before becoming a national academic success and anti-bullying speaker, Fabian was a student who almost dropped out of high school. He struggled academically and questioned whether graduation was even possible. Like many students served by GEAR UP and TRIO programs, he was standing on the edge of giving up.
But he didn’t.
Fabian finished high school and enrolled at San Jacinto College, becoming the first in his family to attend college. His parents didn’t have the financial resources to fund tuition. In fact, his mother had just enough money saved to cover his first semester at junior college. That was it, no backup plan, no cushion.
That first semester? He took only remedial math and reading courses and ended with zero college credits.
For many students, that would have been the end.
But programs focused on college readiness, academic support, and student persistence, like GEAR UP and TRIO, exist for moments exactly like that. Fabian understands firsthand that sometimes a student doesn’t need extraordinary talent. They just need structured support, encouragement, and someone who believes they belong in college.
He kept going.
Fabian eventually transferred and earned his undergraduate degree from Dallas Baptist University, later completing his Master’s degree in Organizational Management. He even began a PhD in Leadership before launching his speaking career full time. Today, he stands as the first in his family to graduate college, proof that persistence and support change outcomes.
In his keynote presentations, especially for GEAR UP and TRIO programs, Fabian teaches students to shift their mindset:
From “I can”
To “I will”
To “I must graduate.”
He often closes with a powerful reminder:
“When a student graduates, their family graduates.”
Students aren’t just earning a diploma for themselves. They are raising the academic ceiling for generations to come. As Fabian tells them, our academic ceiling becomes our future children’s floor. They start where we leave off.
The real question is: Where will we leave off?
For students on the verge of dropping out, academic support programs like GEAR UP and TRIO can make the difference between quitting and completing. And Fabian Ramirez’s life story stands as living proof that with support, mentorship, and college readiness resources, first-generation college students don’t just survive, they succeed.
Invite Fabian to speak to your students and watch how they respond to him.
