Above are the results from the survey. I’d like to point out a couple of points that I learned from the results of the survey.
If you selected this option, you are not alone. Over half (54%) of Educators that answered the survey want to train their students on how to respond to bullies. What I hear is, we want our students to be empowered to respond to bullies so they can feel safe at school. We know that students cannot control their bullies, they can only control how they RESPOND to their bullies. When adults like yourself and myself can teach students on how to respond to bullies, they’ll know how to control their social issues for the rest of their lives.
A close second was Cyberbullying. This is a growing fear with Educators & Parents. When I speak at Parent Nights, we end up talking about social media. The truth is, Cyberbullying has a lot to do with Area #1, Responding to Bullies. However, a students’ response is usually done online via email or comments. Bullying is psychological and when a student is cyberbullied, the brain doesn’t know the difference between online and offline bullying. In fact, online bullying is worse because the mind starts to create worst-case scenarios between the victim and their bully.
To be honest, I put this option into the survey because I knew it would be a low area. When schools invite me to speak to their students, they never ask me to define bullying. Simply defining bullying doesn’t empower students to overcome their enemies.
P.S. We cover the top two areas in our new bullying prevention videos which will be available to purchase next week.
